Should Patriots give up their Social Media Presence for the sake of our Republic? (a eulogy)

When I first got on facebook I took it as a welcome innovation for me that a socially awkward introvert could find validation for viewpoints that were traditionally difficult to articulate in a crowd. However, most of those thoughts could be easily tossed aside not even worthy of public viewing, just quick glimpses of my thought process, or stops along the way to fully realized thought. Words however are an extension of the heart and after the election, in which public discourse is extremely caustic and even those ‘toss-aside’ musings can hurt others feelings to an almost umreconciliable level, I have realized that I am not helping reach others in commonality — which is the highest aspiration of social media — but only hurting others in my search for myself.

After the election, my entire intellectual belief system imploded upon itself. It was all being built without the main architect and in a hasty fashion. After I realized that my aspirations lied in false assumptions I prayed to God for a path forward in which my hope or mankind would rest in a firmer foundation, something I paid intellectual allegiance towards but not a heart allegiance towards, at least for a long time, God in turned answered my prayer and in some fashion pushed my heart to study about wisdom. I have a lot of knowledge but no wisdom. I read through Proverbs and the Book of Wisdom as well as the Book of James and the theme for most of the books regarding wisdom is the willingness to listen to the correction of others, to lay down pride and form a new path towards righteousness.

Before the election I sought, in my facebook dialogue, to be right. However, after the last two months I now am beginning to seek righteousness. The world has six billion individuals on it with six billion ideas on it and it no longer satisfies me to have same several individuals ‘like’ my posts. Everyone is scrambling so quickly for ‘rightness’ that we no longer ask about if this is the best way towards understanding, and that is the highest aspiration of social media — understanding our world and each other. Like I mentioned before we can have a lot of knowledge of the world and even each other but without practical wisdom in its application it is all vanity. My use of social media was self-aggrandizement at the most pathetic of levels. Our country needs those who seek righteousness. That no longer feel the insecure need to be the first in their opinion just so they can feel validated in their own echo chambers. Social Media is good for those are mature and I am not there yet. I seek communion with all of creation, to break bread with other souls. You can’t break bread without tangible physical connections.

Pope Francis called 2016 the ‘Jubilee Year of Mercy’. I pray that for me, personally, 2017 will be the ‘Year of Patient Suffering’.

I pray that I will connect with all of you in some fashion in true tangible ways in the near future. Until then reach out to me via cell phone or email. If you don’t have that then we really don’t know each other that well, at least yet. When I first got on facebook I took it as a welcome innovation for me that a socially awkward introvert could find validation for viewpoints that were traditionally difficult to articulate in a crowd.
